In its third frame and still running hot! Just about every naysayer has been forced to shove their foot deep into their mouth, as James Cameron's Avatar has posted another weekend's worth of strong numbers with $68.3 million, along with news that the film has passed the one-billion dollar mark worldwide.
Box Office Report: Avatar
Avatar has quickly become the fourth highest grossing movie ever, behind James Cameron's Titanic ($1.8 billion), The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King ($1.12 billion) and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest ($1.07 billion). Seeing that sci-fi epic has still got plenty of momentum, we can already expect Avatar to become the second highest grossing movie ever; meaning that James Cameron will be responsible for the two biggest earners in history, and they are leading by a huge margin.
Avatar also grabbed the title for best third weekend take (domestic) ever with $68.3 million; bringing the film's total domestic cume to $352.1 million by its 17th day of release. Internationally, the film has collected $670.2 million in 21 days overseas. Of Avatar's global total, $66.4 million have come from IMAX receipts, a new record for the medium.
Though Avatar continues to take the top spot, there was still plenty of room for the other major releases including Sherlock Holmes, which dropped a minor 38% to $38.4 million, and Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, which pulled in an estimated $36.6 million during its second frame. With the help of primarily these three films, the domestic box office revenues from December 18th to January 3rd reached an estimated $985.4 million, up 31% from the year before.
