Erin Cummings on Bitch Slap

Erin Cummings showed up for interviews looking a lot like her Bitch Slap character. Hel sports a ‘50s pinup girl look among the trio of scantily clad babes. Her real life outfit was a bit more colorful and possibly conservative, but it definitely looked like Hel’s couture.
Cummings Takes a Bitch Slap
“I’m wearing pinupgirlclothing.com, both accessories and the wardrobe,” Cummings said. “Truth be told, the pinup style of Hel was kind of formed by my complete disinterest in standing next to Julia Voth in a bikini. First of all, I saw pictures of both of them and I heard the stories about what their background was. Then they held up my wardrobe for the scene that will be on the special features, with the scene of Hel and Trixie in their bikinis. I said, ‘You can go f*** yourself if you think that I’m standing in a bikini next to a Maxim bikini model. That is not going to happen.’ That’s where that all came from. Then in my real life I went, ‘Oh, I kind of like that style. I’ll do a little more of that.’ It works with a fuller figured girl.”
Hel also sports amazing fishnets that never seem to run until the climactic fight scene. Actually, Cummings says you can see a run earlier if you look for it. “Actually, there is a shot before the end. There’s a shot where I kick my leg up in the air and I go, ‘Hey wait, I have a big hole in my crotch. We’re not going to use that, are you?’ he’s like, ‘No, no, no. Then we’re at Toronto and I went, ‘It’s right there.’ So we went through a lot of fishnets. I had a waffle pattern sunburn so I made sure that I had SPF spray every day on my legs every day after that.”
The fight scenes or sunburns were hardly the biggest challenge for Cummings. Just standing up was tough. “I’m not even kidding because when you’re standing in the sand, I was wearing 3 ½” heels, so just standing there my heels would slowly start sinking in. So the scenes where I’m just standing there having a conversation were the worst because I’m either having to stand up on my toes, flexing all the muscles in my legs and then trying to be a good actor on top of that. Finally, I just told Rick [Jacobson] we need to bury a pancake. So every scene then, it would be this whole thing of dig up the sand, put a pancake down, cover it with sand so Erin can stand like a normal person. Then I look like an Amazon. They’d have to rebury it so it was shorter and then I’d be too short. It was just a nightmare. The fight scenes I’ll take any day other than just standing in heels in the sand.”
Bitch Slap isn’t even out yet but the hype and buzz have landed Cummings more work. She can only laugh at her great fortune to keep it in perspective. “I laugh because to me it’s almost comical how this movie has created a complete 180 in my life and my career. I’m sort of the quintessential been there, been doing it forever. I had done every play and short film, student film, independent film. A lot of them never came out and a lot of them I never got paid for. Bitch Slap was just going to be just another independent film that never saw the light of day. That’s what it kind of was for me. I was just happy that I was actually getting a lead role in something that was a feature. So in the year and a half since I’ve done Bitch Slap, my resume has increased three times. I’ve gotten 10 times better representation. I’ve been able to travel around the world. I have more miles than I know what to do with. It literally has completely changed my career and therefore my life and I’m in a completely different place because of it. I know that’s because of my experience on Bitch Slap and it’s not even out. That’s the crazy thing is that it has completely changed my life and the movie hasn’t even come out yet.”
Bitch Slap opens to theaters on January 8th.
