We knew the news was coming, and now Paramount Pictures has given the official green light for sequels to both Star Trek and G.I. Joe. Well, Star Trek XII was ready to go, but they have modified the release date a bit.
Star Trek and G.I. Joe Sequels
Since G.I. Joe was able to haul in $302 million worldwide, Paramount saw no reason to stop a sequel from being made. The studio is currently in negotiations with scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick to pen the script. This is the same duo that provided the screenplay for Zombieland. The pair are also currently working on the Deadpool spinoff for Fox.
Seein an opportunity, Paramount has also shifted the release date for the next Star Trek to June 29th, 2012. While the date may seem odd at first, you will notice that it leads right into the Fourth of July holiday; a date that is typically taken by big fighting robots. Star Trek alums Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman have teamed on the script for the sequel with Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof, who also worked on last year's reboot. Abrams will definitely produce, but has yet to commit to direct.
