Avatar an Oscar Candidate
With Avatar taking the Golden Globe for Best Picture (for a drama) and Best Director for James Cameron, the film is showing the same momentum that enabled Titanic to practically sweep the Academy Awards. If anything, expect Avatar to be nominated as one of the ten best pictures, along with James Cameron getting the nod for Best Director, and don't get me started on the technical aspects.
Avatar All-Time #1 in China
China, who I don't believe follows too many environmental regulations, has been enchanted by Avatar. The film just set a new Chinese box office record by breaking 500 million yuan, or $73.2 million, in just two weeks! The moviegoers there are so psyched on the film that they are even buying scalped tickets.
Avatar Takes 4-Day Weekend
Though The Book of Eli opened strong, Avatar has officially become the first film in a decade to top domestic weekend rankings fives straight frames. The film's domestic cume is now somewhere close to $505.1 million.
Avatar Top Choice for Visual Effects Society
As expected, Avatar is doing great with the Visual Effects Society, having picked up eleven nominations this Monday. Weta Digital gets props for helping the film land nine of its eleven nominations.
