Buried
The Sundance feature, Buried, began getting momentum (with the help of a poster and a trailer) even before the film started playing before an audience. Now that people have seen it the thriller, it comes as no surprise that the film has already been picked up.
Buried Acquired by Lionsgate
Lionsgate has acquired the domestic distribution rights to Buried, the thriller that follows a private contractor (Ryan Reynolds) who has been kidnapped and buried alive. The film is the first signed acquisition, but there are expected to be plenty more. Though it should be noted that a new type of marketing strategy is being employed at Sundance this year. Instead of getting big studio execs to see their movies, filmmakers are focusing on filling their showings with general moviegoers. The ability to get word of mouth and prove the marketability of a film typically results in a better pickup; even if it may take a bit longer.
Buried opens to theaters in 2010.
