Avatar came in about ten million above expectations this weekend by earning an impressive haul of $36 million in its sixth frame. Easily taking the top spot, the film also broke more (major) box office records over the past few days.
Avatar Dominates Box Office Again
Avatar dropped only 16% from last weekend. 16%! Crazy. Thanks to the continued revenue stream, Avatar has now officially taken down The Dark Knight as the second highest grossing film ever at the domestic box office. The sequel to Batman Begins held the spot with $533.3 million until Avatar closed out the weekend with $552.8 million. Strong, but still behind Titanic's domestic gross.
Avatar did however take down the international box office record once held by Titanic at $1.24 billion with a hefty $1.28 billion. If you did the math then you would have concluded that the film's worldwide cume now stands at $1.84 billion. Meaning that Avatar will surpass Titanic as the all-time box office champ before next weekend.
"Having been a part of the Titanic phenomenon, we never thought this day would come in our careers," said Fox Intl. co-prexys Paul Hanneman and Tomas Jegeus. "But James Cameron created in Avatar a film with such humanity and magic that it resonates with people of every culture."
Thanks most in part to Avatar and Legion's opening of $18.2 million, the weekend box office was up 6% over the same frame last year.
