Avatar was hoping to pull down it's eight weekend straight. But low and behold, it took a romance to steal the title of box office champ.
Avatar Loses Eight Streak Due to Dear John
Dear John took down Avatar? Who would have thought? Screen Gems threw the hail mary over the weekend with Dear John, which opened to an impressive $32.4 million. Avatar took the second spot with $23.6 million
A strong weekend, though it didn't amount to much for From Paris With Love, which only did $8.1 million in ticket sales during its opening bow; far below expectations. The film might have some sort of recovery next weekend, considering that it won't have to go up against the male-grabbing Super Bowl again.
Dear John didn't need to worry about the sporting event, as a whopping 84% of the film's audience was women; about 16% less than I would have imagined. Thanks to all the girls and women out there, the romantic drama looks to have earned the title for biggest opener during a Super Bowl weekend.
Though Avatar slipped to second place domestically, the film still took the top spot overseas with $76 million.
