While I still doubt that Universal can make a remake of The Thing scarier than the one starring Kurt Russell, at least they know the power of eye candy. Casting one of my biggest crushes, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, the studio has begun to fill out the film's title cast.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton for The Thing

Joel Edgerton has also been cast to star in The Thing, which is based on the 1982 cult classic involving a hard to kill alien who terrorizes a group of people at a remote facility in the Antarctic.

Directed by Matthijs Van Heijningen off a script by Ronald D. Moore and Eric Heisserer, the remake will have Winstead play a Ph.D. candidate who joins a Norwegian research team in Antarctica after it discovers an alien ship in the ice. When a trapped organism is freed and begins a series of attacks, she is forced to team with a blue-collar mercenary helicopter pilot (Edgerton) to stop the rampage.

As you can tell, this is a very loose version of the original. The film is set to begin production in Toronto on March 15th.
