American Idol American Idol

Brokenhearted Benami - The show opened with a commercial for Clash of the Titans interspersed with clips of the contestants and judges. And in a predictable ending they called to “release the kraken” and cut to Simon. No imagination required here.

The highlight of the night was no group performance. But, who knew what we were in for with guest performers.

First up was American Idol Season 2 winner Ruben Studdard. The Velvet Teddy Bear has dropped a great amount of weight. He reported he has become a vegan and works out. Ruben looks great and perspires less when he performs. This is always a plus. Although his vocals were smooth, the song itself was (I hate to say this) boring.

The Ford Music Video, “Kung Fu Fighting”, displayed so-so vocals and was not nearly as cute as previous ads.

Now for what we came to see – dim the lights. Lee Dewyze was first up and deemed safe. Casey James was also granted safety, followed by Aaron Kelly. Siobhan Magnus and Katie Stevens were asked to stand and Katie was the first sent to the stools of shame.

Usher performed “OMG” with Will.I.Am. OMG says it all. The vocals left much to be desired. And I am not sure (as with Flo Rida and others along the way) the back-up dancing was appropriate for the small children who love and watch this show.

Kieran was ordered to pull down the lights again. Did anyone notice Ryan isn’t touting the huge numbers of votes they received? Didi Benami is first up and added to the Bottom 3. Mike Lynche and Crystal Bowersox were both pronounced safe. The remaining contestants Tim Urban and Andrew Garcia stood and Tim was dubbed the final member of the Bottom 3. This has become a weekly event. Ryan immediately sent Katie back to the sofa of safety.

Diddy with Dirty Money “sang” (lip synced) “Hello, Good Morning”. He is flash and bling at its finest. Also, as with Usher, a little B&G (bump and grind) to go with the R&B.

Didi was named the lowest vote getter. She reprised “Rhiannon” and did a fine job. No surprise, after the pretend judge’s summit, Simon told her they would not exercise the save.

How long can Tim hang on? Will he leave other more worthy contestants in his wake? Were you sad or surprised to see Didi go? Next week the Top 9 will be choosing from the Lennon/McCartney songbook. American Idol performances Tuesday and results Wednesday on Fox.
