The group number was a Beatles medley and featured solo performances from the contestants. They sported mod 60’s black and white clothes. Actually, this was one of the better group efforts.
American Idol: Season 9 Top 9 Results
The Ford music video was set to Billy Preston’s “Will It Go Round in Circles” with a kaleidoscope theme – also good.
Now Ryan uttered those dreaded words – bring down the lights. He asked Siobhan Magnus, Crystal Bowersox and Katie Stevens to come to center stage. He then deemed Crystal safe. Ryan then asked which of the two remaining girls would be in the Bottom 3. The answer was neither. All the girls were safe this week. Kara’s protégé, Jason Derulo performed “What You Say” and “In My Head”. Great dancing and pyrotechnics. Good stuff. Kara said Jason is an incredible song writer. Simon said great.
David Archuleta, Season 7 runner-up, reprised “Imagine”. His voice has matured nicely. This performance surpassed any during the Idol competition. David told Ryan he is writing and recording his next album.
Now back to the results. Ryan told Kieran to bring down the lights and said he would divide the 6 remaining guys into 2 groups. To the far side of the stage went Lee DeWyze, Casey James and Tim Urban. To the near side reported Michael Lynche, Aaron Kelly and Andrew Garcia. Which group would be the Bottom 3? Lee, Casey and Tim were sent to the sofa of safety. Mike, Aaron and Andrew are the Bottom 3. The first to be given safety was Aaron Kelly.
Rihanna rocked out “Rock Star 101”. Her costume was Catwoman meets Kiss. Very interesting.
It was time to get down to the nitty gritty. Dim the lights and here we go. Andrew was safe. Big Mike chose “This Woman’s Work” and sang for his life. (Ryan reminded us the Judges’ Save could only be until the Final 5.) This was his best effort of the season. After the judges conferred, Simon reported it was unanimous - they chose to exercise the save. Michael Lynche would not be leaving the competition. We will still have 9 contestants for next week and two will be eliminated.
Was this a shocking result? Was using “The Save” the right thing to do? Should the judges have waited until later in the competition? Will this make one of the favorites be an innocent victim? Next week’s mentor will be Season 8 runner-up Adam Lambert. American Idol performances Tuesday – results Wednesday on Fox.
