Christopher Mintz-Plasse doesn’t mind if I call him McLovin. It’s his claim to fame and gave him a career and a love life, which he describes much more graphically than I just did. Now he gets to be a badass superhero in Kick-Ass. He plays Red Mist.
Christopher Mintz-Plasse Talks Kick-Ass
“That was the most badass I ever felt when I was wearing the costume to be honest,” Mintz-Plasse said in a press conference at the South by Southwest film festival.
It wasn’t easy to work in a costume, but it was worth it. “My mask had some points at the end so it kind of pushed my cheeks down during the whole film, so I had to work with that and my mouth like this. That was difficult but I think that was the only hard part. Not really a malfunction, that was how to act in a costume, right? The mask is part of the costume.”
It took a few tries to get the costume right too. The original incarnation might not have been so badass. “When we first made the costume it was red on the sleeves and black here. [Mark Millar] came in said it looked like Michael Jackson. Then they reversed the colors. Aaron [Johnson] said the very first costume looked like the Michilan man, because it had big muscle padding all over. So I was kind of bulky walking around and it was very uncomfortable. I’m glad we got rid of that.”
