Urban Flight - The show opened with President and Michelle Obama thanking the Idol community for the $140 million dollars raised in the past by Idol Gives Back. The Pres quoted Randy and the Mrs. told Simon to be nice.

Queen Latifah hosted the festivities in the Pasadena Civic Auditorium.

The Top 12 were reunited to sing “Keeping the Dream Alive”. They were dressed in head to toe white. Another lip-syncing nightmare.

Jennifer Garner taped a visit to Virginia for Save the Children. They provide books and food for needy children. Victoria Beckham also made a plea for Save the Children.

Next up was a comic bit with Jonah Hill and Russell Brand – lame.


American Idol: Season 9 Top 10 Results


Black Eyed Peas performed “Rock that Body”. Fergie sported a snake skin look with matching over the knee boots.

Malaria No More has cut the death toll in half in many African countries. Ryan traveled to Kenya and reported on a pregnant mother who died from malaria.

A staged bit where George Lopez allegedly won an auction to deliver the results on tonight’s show. Instead he asked to “Dim the lights” and judged the judges.

The Ford Music Video with some awesome freeze frame set to “We’ve Got a Big Mess on our Hands”.

Now Ryan said “Dim the lights” and brought Crystal Bowersox and Casey James to center stage. He said one would be safe and one would be in the Bottom 3. Crystal is sent to the sofa of safety and Casey to the stools of shame. The next twosome up was Aaron Kelly and Lee DeWyze. Aaron was directed to join Casey on the stools. Lee was safe.

Joss Stone and Jeff Beck slayed, “I’ve Put a Spell on You”. Kara Dioguardi reported on African mothers dying in childbirth.



Randy Jackson and Morgan Freeman checked on literacy programs in Freeman’s native Mississippi. Save the Children provides books and reading enhancement opportunities.

Alicia Keyes sang, “Unthinkable” and “Empire State of Mind” with some wonky notes. Not sure about the jumpsuit either.

Another comedy bit with fake celebrities answering the telethon phone lines. There were some real celebs – Slash and Jim Carrey.

American Idol Season 4 winner Carrie Underwood crooned “Change”. What a beauty she is.

Ellen DeGeneres spotlighted Feeding America with David Arquette. They have fed 37 million people.

Ryan discussed Global Health with Bill and Melinda Gates. They spoke of the need for vaccines and bed nets. They advised people to join the One Campaign and make a difference in the developing world.

Wanda Sykes did a stand-up routine about the craziness of having the eliminated singers perform when people didn’t vote for them to stay and sing. Funny.

“Dim the lights” – Ryan had the remaining contestants Siobhan Magnus, Michael Lynche and Tim Urban come to center stage. First, Siobhan was sent to safety followed by Big Mike. Tim was the last member of the Bottom 3.

American Idol Season 7 winner, David Cook, took a trip to Ethiopia and visited The UN Foundation’s schools for girls. His interaction with these girls was priceless.

Annie Lennox, who was stranded in London due to the volcano, profiled a 7 year old girl with AIDS. She is only the weight of a one year old and has pneumonia. But after some of the drugs were able to take effect, the girl’s condition improved greatly. Annie performed “Universal Child”.

Mary J. Blige and an all star band, featuring Randy Jackson, rocked “Stairway to Heaven”.

Simon checked in on the mobile unit of Children’s Health Fund in Douglas, Arizona. It provides medical help to those who would otherwise have none.

The entertainment portion of the evening concluded with Sir Elton John (whose AIDS Foundation is legendary). He performed the inspirational “Your Song”.

Now down to the results. Ryan said “Dim the lights” – Aaron Kelly was proclaimed safe, Casey James was also safe and Tim Urban was eliminated. Roll the tape of Tim’s Idol Journey.

Was anyone surprised with this week’s result? Disappointed? Next week’s mentor will be Shania Twain and our idols will make their musical selections from her songbook. Who will have an advantage with the Country genre? American Idol performances Tuesday – results Wednesday on Fox.
