“My Way” or the Highway - Over 100,000 began this journey and only 5 remain.
Harry Connick Jr. had the privilege to utter the famous “This is American Idol”. (Has anyone other than Ryan done this?) Harry made his first recording at age 10. He penned the soundtrack to “When Harry Met Sally” at age 22. Connick has sold over 25 million records.
Frank Sinatra’s career spanned 6 decades. He was the definitive crooner. He passed in 1998. Frank’s daughters, Nancy and Tina, gifted Simon with a monogrammed handkerchief (Simon is a huge Sinatra fan).
Letís break it down from the best to the rest.
American Idol: Season 9 Top 5
Lee DeWyze – “That’s Life” – perfect song choice, great performance quality, most comfortable he has looked, outstanding vocal – Randy said stayed rocker self, loved it – Ellen said if this was the last night of performances you would have won this thing – Kara said you can win this thing – Simon said Harry brought out your personality and confidence, gave it 110%, by far best performance of the night.
Michael Lynche – “The Way You Look Tonight” – my favorite performance from him, genre suits him, smooth, comfortable – Randy said in it to win it, threw down the gauntlet – Ellen said most comfortable, look the part, sounded the part, charisma – Kara said found drama in song, didn’t lose yourself in song – Simon said tricky night, put yourself back in the game, fantastic, well done.
Crystal Bowersox – “Summer Wind” – beautiful vocal, good performance not a great one, still don’t like the evening gown look on her even if it is Sinatra – Randy said subdued performance, ok, a little sleepy – Ellen said swallowing every word at beginning, got better later in the song, so impressive – Kara said out of your element but kind of liked it, like your phrasing – Simon said felt indulgent, second half better, had two ok weeks, need to be in it to win it, expect better
Aaron Kelly – “Fly Me to the Moon” – improved pitch, zero performance value, soul not in it – Randy said really good job – Ellen said heard no country in that, beautiful vocals – Kara said good, not as strong as last week, need to ‘learn’ (don’t know how you do that) charisma, you are so close – Simon said didn’t have conviction, vocals toward end corny, people like you because you try hard.
Casey James – “Blue Skies” – without guitar (should have done blues guitar – may have worked better), vocals not strong enough to pull off song, tried smiling his way through it – Randy said your worst performance, pitchy until last note, didn’t work – Ellen said felt stiff, didn’t feel effortless – Kara said held some notes, sound like lamb (bleating), need work on vibrato – Simon said you weren’t fantastic, came over as embarrassed and awkward (Harry said he ‘killed it’ in rehearsal).
How did your favorite fare with the Sinatra Songbook? Did anyone have a ‘Once in My Life’ performance? Who will make it to the Final 4? Performances by this week’s mentor (the best yet might I add), Harry Connick Jr. and Lady GaGa. American Idol performances Tuesday – results Wednesday on Fox.
