Iron Man 2
The Mickey Rourke comeback continues. After the Oscar nominated performance in The Wrestler, Rourke gets to be comic book supervillain Whiplash in the summer blockbuster Iron Man 2.
Mickey Rourke Talks Iron Man 2
“I had a lot of fun,” Rourke said. “It was great because I worked with some great people, and [Robert Downey, Jr.] was real easy to work with. It makes it fun.”
It was also nice to have the Hollywood perks again. “It was nice because I’d just come off working a film where there was no budget and I didn’t even have a chair to sit in. I remember on the first day [of Iron Man 2] I asked for a cappuccino, and they said, ‘What kind would you like?’ So it was nice.”
Rourke fit right into the Iron Man work ethic. The loose set welcomes input from the actors on the day of shooting. “We had a great time. We had a lot of fun, and I think we were doing this improvisation where I said, ‘Bring me some Vodka,’ or ‘This wine is sh*t,’ and I just moved the wine over, and [Sam Rockwell] just took his glass and [threw it] and said, ‘Yeah, this is sh*t!’ So he was fun to work with.”
Notorious for carting around his dog, Rourke made a new animal friend on the set of Iron Man 2. His character is obsessed with a bird, and Rourke kept the animal actor. “He’s home. I have the real one.”
Iron Man 2 opens to theaters on May 7th.
