DeWyze Guy - Ryan started the night by telling us one of these three would be your next American Idol. Then we got right into the performances. Each of the contestants would be singing a song of their choice and a song chosen for them by the judges.
Here are the performances in order of their appearance.
American Idol: Season 9 Top 3
Round 1 - Contestant’s choice:
Casey James “Ok, It’s Alright with Me” by Eric Hutchinson – too light a song, never pick little known songs, could have phoned this one in – Randy said just ‘ahright’ with me, safe, easy – Ellen said needed to bring something bigger – Kara said hard to pick a song nobody knows, didn’t work in your favor – Simon said will leave no lasting effect, dud song choice, but sounded good.
Crystal Bowersox – “Come to My Window” by Melissa Etheridge – predictable song choice, mostly well sung with a screech or two – Randy said did not love the arrangement, I loved your vocal, worked in the end – Ellen said good song choice, Melissa would be proud – Kara said acoustically would have been stronger, your tone fighting arrangement and you don’t have Melissa’s raspiness, hope you have a moment tonight – Simon said not the most stunning version, haven’t compromised yourself as an artist, right choice.
Lee DeWyze – “Simple Man” by Leonard Skynyrd – good choice, suited voice, slowed it up, well done with a couple wonky notes, crowd went wild – Randy said great song choice, you sounded amazing, somebody feeling like they can win this thing – Ellen said (I refuse to write what Ellen said it was something stupid about a lamb and a gazelle and if they have her back next season I may boycott) –Kara said you showed us everything you got, round one to Lee – Simon said that song on the money, crushed the other two.
Rankings after Round 1 – 1. Lee 2. Crystal 3. Casey
Round 2 - Judges’ choice:
Casey James – “Daughters” by John Mayer (Chosen by Randy and Kara) – sweet, good performance, electric guitar solo – Randy said fit you like a glove, nice one – Ellen said beautiful, really good – Kara said more artistic side of you, good job, changed it up but not too far – Simon said better song choice than first one, lazy song choice (Kara objected) but sounded good.
Crystal Bowersox – “Maybe I’m Amazed” by Paul McCartney (chosen by Ellen) – really worked it, maybe too much in spots, came close – Randy said great song, great vocals, somebody else is in it to win it – Ellen said I couldn’t have asked for more – Kara said no instrument a risk, showed parts of your voice we’ve never heard before – Simon said surprised at the song choice but now I get it, now I understand you’ve got soul, you will be thanking Ellen for putting you in the finals.
Lee DeWyze – “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen (chosen by Simon) – with strings, chorus and fabulous lighting, best performance of the season bar none, finally an ‘Idol Moment” – Randy said waiting all season, your biggest moment, unbelievable – Ellen said stunning – Kara said you are what this show is all about, you owned the night – Simon said proud of you, you proved you are a fantastic singer and a great person, I hope for you you make it to next week.
Rankings for Round 2 – 1. Lee 2. Crystal 3. Casey
Ranking for the night doesn’t take a math mind to figure out – Lee DeWyze won the night, Crystal Bowersox second and Casey James in third.
