Less than 2% separated our finalists. Ryan introduced the judges and acknowledged this was Simon’s final show. Randy gave Simon a standing O.
Crystal Bowersox and Lee DeWyze were introduced. Both sported prep school uniforms. The Top 12, accompanied by guitarist Orianthi, sang “School’s Out”. They were joined by none other than Alice Cooper.
Kris Allen (they DO still know he exists) sang his new single, “The Truth”. He looks and sounds great.
Ryan touted the ‘End of an Era’ and rolled a film tribute to Simon.
American Idol: Season 9 Finale (Results)
Siobhan Magnus and Aaron Kelly shared a duet of “How Deep is Your Love”. Out came the two remaining Brother’s Gibb, Barry and Robin.
Michael Lynche paired with Michael McDonald on “Taking it to the Streets”. McDonald was straining a bit.
Dane Cook performed a ‘special song’ of Simon insults. He was joined on stage by some of the past bad/joke contestants.
The Top 6 girls sang “Beautiful” and “Fighter”. Christina Aguilera crooned her new ballad, “You Lost Me”. There were some wonky notes. Am I alone in not liking the corset and tights? Her new album “Bionic” drops in June.
Ricky Gervais pronounced Simon the “Kingmaker” who takes 80% of the earnings from the talent he discovers. He quipped about Simon being a 58 year old lap dancer. He closed by saying you should go by Simon’s home because he throws out crumpled money in the trash.
The Top 6 guys performed a medley of Hall and Oates greatest hits. They were joined by Daryl and John for “You Make my Dreams Come True”.
Crystal Bowersox teamed with Alanis Morissette for “Ironic” and “You Oughta Know”.
Idol winner of 5 years ago, Carrie Underwood, gave us her latest effort “Undo It”. She is amazingly beautiful and what vocals. She co-wrote the song with AI’s own Kara Dioguardi.
Kris Allen awarded the finalists with their own custom Fiestas.
The Ford Music Video set to “My Wish” featured clips of previous videos.
Casey James rocked “Every Rose has its Thorn” with Poison’s Bret Michaels. He looked well.
The 70’s group Chicago united with Lee DeWyze for a medley of their hits.
Another video featured Simon ‘the flirt’.
Larry Platt, with a bevy of back up dancers, reprised his popular “Pants on the Ground”. William Hung chimed in at the end of the performance.
Now we had the Paula Abdul segment. Paula said eight years ago she began sitting behind a desk with two men with bigger boobs than hers. Dressed in pink, Paula was center stage. She stated Idol won’t be the same without Simon, but it will go on. Cue “My Way” by Frank Sinatra.
The American Idol winners, sans David Cook (committed to a previous charity event) sang “Together we are One”. They were joined by many former Idol contestants. Simon was coaxed up on stage and said, ”The show will go on. Thank you for your support and fun. You are the judges. It’s been a blast.”
The Top 12 sang along with Janet Jackson. It was eerie how much like her brother Michael she sounds.
Crystal, Lee and Joe Cocker rasped and wailed “A Little Help from my Friends”. It suited both finalists.
Finally, Ryan uttered that phrase – “Dim the lights let’s get to it”. “The winner of American Idol 2010 is Lee DeWyze.”
The confetti shower rained down as Lee tried to hold back tears while he sang “Beautiful Day”.
Are you happy with the results? Are you surprised? Was it a proper send-off for Simon? You can’t say I didn’t predict the outcome (see American Idol Season 9 Finale). How will AI be without Simon? We shall see – the new format starts next season Tuesday night performances 90 minutes with Wednesday night results 30 minutes – American Idol Season 10 on Fox.
