Spartacus
The original epic Spartacus must be Universal’s answer to Lawrence of Arabia. These are the kind of movies you want to see in all new detail in HD, and Sony still hasn’t put out Lawrence.
Spartacus on Blu-Ray
The widescreen vistas look magnificent and the Technicolor skin tones, red desert and costumes hold up in HD. There is a faint hint of film grain, as there would have been in a theatrical exhibition. It’s tightened up in HD so it looks a bit like artificial digital grain, but it’s a suitable compromise.
The detail is still Blu Ray extraordinary. You see all the detail in the grizzled warrior faces and rippling gladiator bodies. The textures of costumes, sets and location put you up close and personal with ancient Rome, or at least the ‘60s equivalent of it. Battle scenes are packed with distinct figures and fiery glory.
