Despicable Me
Let me start by saying that Universal Pictures was due. After seeing just about every release in 2010 falling under expectations, the studio finally knocked one out of the park by going far beyond the best box office expectations for Despicable Me. Drawing in the families, the film easily took the top spot at the weekend box office.
Box Office Winner: Despicable Me
Though Despicable Me was expected to suffer slightly considering that it is an original story, the CG animation took in an estimated $60.1 million during its opening frame.
Starring Steve Carell, Despicable Me's victory was more impressive for the fact that it is the third 3D film in the market after Disney/Pixar's Toy Story 3 and Paramount's The Last Airbender.
Coming in at number two is Summit's The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. The film dropped 49% in its sophomore outing to take in another $33.4 million. As of right now, the film is tracking for a better box office run than New Moon; which was considered grossly high.
Lastly there was Predators, which picked up Fox's male-driven audience. Taking the Predator franchise in a whole new direction, the film opened to $25.3 million.
All in all, the box office was up a whopping 38% over the same frame last year.
