Inception
While I would have loved to see Warner Bros. get a fourth win with Inception, the momentum was definitely with The Other Guys going into the weekend. Though the film turned out not being as funny as most had hoped, it still took the number one spot.
Box Office Champ: The Other Guys
Sony's The Other Guys opened to $35.6 million, easily beating the $18.6 million brought in by Inception during its fourth weekend of release. Though Warner Bros. could not hold the top spot, they were still able to beat out this weekend's other wide release, Step Up 3D, which danced an estimated $15.5 million out of moviegoers.
The Other Guys marks the second solid opening for a Sony male-driven comedy this summer. The studio found a hit with Grown Ups, a film that couldn't impress the critics but still debuted with $40.5 million on June 25th. The film has since gone on to earn a boffo $155.7 million. And while Grown Ups scored an A- CinemaScore rating when it opened, auds gave Guys a B- rating, which could mean less haul in the long run.
Though the frame faired well, it couldn't continue the current trend of up weekends, as this weekend was down some 10% compared with the same frame last year.
