Night at the Museum
No competition. Though Night at the Museum was on its second weekend for the four-day holiday, there wasn't anything out there to compete with the film.
Night at the Museum Takes New Year BO
Night at the Museum took the number one spot again with $46.7 million over extended weekend. Playing the strongest card he's got -- family comedy -- Stiller found a bigger audience this weekend than on Christmas. Museum played at 3,768 locations with a screen average of $12,394.
Though being called one of the best films of the year, DreamWorks' Dreamgirls just didn't have enough screens to offer any serious competition. No matter, the film was still able to rake in an impressive $18.7 million off only 852 screens. The musical has earned $41.6 million since its opening on Christmas.
What about the niche films? Though 'niche' hasn't done too well this year, it looks like audiences are changing their minds with Pan's Labyrinth. The Spanish film earned $775,706 over the holiday. I know, doesn't sound good, right? Well, since the film only played on 17 locations, the per-screen average comes to $45,630. Impressed yet?
Nine of the films in the top ten saw a boost in business over the holiday save Rocky Balboa. Apocalypto had a 19% bump while Charlotte's Web tried to shake off its slow start with $15.5 million over the weekend.
The Rocky Balboa did take a small dip, MGM didn't let that spoil their New Years celebration. The film has now cumed $51.1 million in two frames and has become MGM's top film of 2006. Since Balboa's budget was estimated at about $24 million, the film is easily out of the red.
