Cedric the Entertainer's new movie, Code Name: The Cleaner may be ridiculous, but he's serious about comedy. He plays a janitor with amnesia who thinks he was a spy. His "flashbacks" get him into some trouble, such as when he imagines slapping his military team on their way onto the mission, but really finds himself smacking and old lady's ass.
Interview: Cedric the Entertainer Talks Being a Cleaner
"I was smackin’ some booty, the old booty smack and that was her idea," Cedric said. "'Smack it!’ I was like, ‘Damn!’ No, it was actually we were just having some fun with the fantasy sequences and so we thought it was a fun scene to add in. We thought about it to add in the comedy, and so when I’m hitting my guys to get on the helicopter and in my imagination, I’ve caught this regular lady who’s there on a family vacation. She seemed to enjoy it. She calls me. I get emails from her quite often, ‘Hey big boy!’"
Cedric does a lot of improvisation, as the film's outtakes reveal many of his alternate takes. "It was when we were doing the scenes, I asked for a lot of takes on when I’m kind of delirious and I’m coming up. So it was just things that I wanted to make sure we made the right choices there, but I was pretty happy though because I was improving a lot of them. You just vary it on taste at that point so it didn’t really matter that much to me."

The star wasn't the only one with a say on the takes though. His costar, Lucy Liu, receives an executive producer credit on the film. "It was very important, especially in today’s movie world, to get your foreign distribution. So it was one of these things, the necessary aspects to have someone who has that kind of presence in that world and that’s how Lucy came on as an executive producer, because she was an important aspect of making sure we were able to open, get the movie and shoot the movie at a budget we thought was going to be necessary."
She handles most of the action, while all of Cedric's action is more of a fantasy. He only had to train for the janitor scenes. "That was the whole thing, because you had the real janitors coming out saying, ‘Hey, what are you doing? You don’t buff like that, come here. Let me show you how to buff, young man.’"
Code Name: The Cleaner opens to theatres on January 5th.
