Factotum
If you’re looking for that good “pick-me-up” type movie that rattles your heart, lifts your spirit and makes you laugh like there’s no tomorrow, then be sure to keep this DVD in it’s case as you throw it on the fire. If you are on any type of medication I would highly advise you to not watch this movie. If your medicated ass doesn’t want to heed my advice, make sure you have a family member there with you for 24 hours on suicide watch.
DVD Review: Factotum
Now that I have gotten that warning out of the way, you have to watch this movie if only for Matt Dillon’s performance. He truly shines in a dark, hung over sort of way. And Lili Taylor, while not playing a character you’d want to bring home to mom and dad, plays her part remarkably.
With more cigarettes and alcohol than the engine room of a Soviet frigate during break time, Factotum is an adaptation of the 1975 Charles Bukowski book by the same title. If you know anything about Bukowski, you’ll know why I had my warnings in the first paragraph. I think Bukowski is Polish for, “manic depressive”. The film has very few heart warming bright spots but its dance with the intoxicated, unemployed life of people who think they have no reason to live, is eye opening. The film will also have you chuckling at the oddest things, i.e. getting crabs and having to tape your testicles to your butt. Hey, you’ll take any laughs you can get with Bukowski material.
Stay tuned for updates.
