Children of Men
When I film finally enters wide release we don't really have to announce it. Children of Men, however, did amazingly well with the critics last year and has popped up on multiple Top Ten lists of 2006 including Fred's. Since this film is definitely worth a viewing, here is a reminder that your chance to see it will come tomorrow, January 5th.
Children of Men to Get Expanded on January 5th
The exhilarating sci-fi action thriller has received among the top Critic Award nominations this year, including the Chicago, London, Phoenix, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Dallas, and Boston Film Critics Awards. This harrowing glimpse of humanities perceivably bleak future is a meaningful triumph which offers the viewer a delicate vision of hope.... an experience no one should miss. Rolling Stone observes that “one of the pleasures of modern movies is watching an artist like Alfonso Cuaron at work”, and The New York Times hails this serious political thriller as being “superbly directed”.
"Spellbinding. One of the pleasures of modern movies is watching an artist like Alfonso Cuaron at work. Here's a movie that grabs you hard, pops your eyes, provokes your mind and ultimately lifts your spirits. Cuaron, invoking shattered landscapes from Beirut to Baghdad, is dedicated to locating shards of humanity among the ruins. Emmanuel Lubezki [is] a weaver of visual miracles. No movie in the last year is more redolent of sorrowful beauty and exhilarating action. You don't just watch the scene, you live inside it, ducking each fresh, ferocious assault. The technique disappears to envelop you in the moment. That's Cuaron's magic. Cuaron has a gift only the greatest filmmakers share: he makes you believe. "
-- Peter Travers, Rolling Stone
Children of Men is an amazing work of cinema. The story may be familiar sci-fi but the filmmaking itself is so fascinating, I just wanted to watch more and more of this unfold.
Children of Men is so exciting because its action scenes unfold in single takes. Theo and Kee escape from various captors without ever cutting to a point of view or reaction shot. The camera just hangs with them, in pretty impossible filming conditions, and it’s real panic because you just don’t know what else can happen with the limitations of such photography.

I kind of lied up above. Yes, we are reminding you of the film's expanded release because it is in fact damn good, but I left out the part that today's news has been so slow that I was finally able to clean my keyboard with my own tears.
Yes, that bad.
Anywho, go see Children of Men.
Children of Men will expand to 1200 theaters tomorrow, January 5th.
