I never know what to do with these massive blockbuster DVDs. I'm not going to watch five hours of behind the scenes footage on how they use computers to add characters or backgrounds to green screen footage. Or how hard the actors trained. Or how they composed the musical score.
DVD Review: Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest promises on its cover "More About Captain Jack Sparrow." So if that's their big gun, and it is a fabulous character, I thought that would be worth exploring.
They certainly are thorough on the costume. Find out how they made his hat float with a rubber-leather hybrid, how they modified the boots for water scenes and where they found some of the weirder stuff. Certainly details on the shirt and his beads are only going to be of interest to fashion designers, but there are plenty of stories on Johnny Depp's method-y attachment to each item. Then you see Depp himself in the makeup chair discussing that attachment.
It's more than 20 parts though. Some are only a few seconds mentioning the item, but most are a solid couple minutes on each detail of his facial hair, makeup, jewelry, props… It runs 27 and a half total.
I did want to see the spot on putting Depp into the Pirates ride. That's cool because it has old footage of the ride in its earliest years. Then it's a big defense and justification of revising the ride. Seeing them bring ideas to the actors is cool though, and if you ever wanted to know how they program animatronic robots…
