After jumping around the topic for over a year, Fox has cleared the way for James Cameron's sci-fi pic Avatar.
Cameron's Avatar for Summer 2009
20th Century Fox has decided that it's now ready to dump a whopping $200 million into the production budget of the long-planned sci-fi tentpole Avatar. James Cameron and studio are hoping for a summer 2009 release.
Avatar pits a band of humans in a battle against a distant planet's indigenous population.
With a budget this big and a box office history that last featured Titanic's $1.8 billion, James Cameron has a lot to match up to. But hey, by the time Avatar reaches the bigscreen it will be 12 years since both guys and girls wept over Leonardo DiCaprio's demise.
Cameron conceived the story for Avatar 11 years ago, but waited for the technology to catch up before fully immersing himself in the pic. He instead immersed camera equipment into the ocean for Titanic.
"I've wanted to do it since then, but sort of shoved it in the back of a drawer," he told Daily Variety. Despite Cameron's "picking away" at the film for the last year and a half, Fox greenlit the film only this week.
Now that Avatar has the greenlight, Cameron will place all of his efforts into the film's production. Though he claims to have been doing this since 2005, he has also been bouncing around another project, Battle Angel, for some time as well.
If you have been keeping up with Cameron, you know that he, like Lucas, believes that the 3-D medium is the way of the future. Avatar will be shot in 3-D with James Cameron's assumption that there will be enough theatres featuring the necessary projector equipment in 2009 to allow a wide release.
