Avatar
Talk about stealing somebody's thunder. Just when Fox and James Cameron announced that they were moving ahead with Avatar, M. Night Shyamalan comes out of nowhere and says he will be creating an Avatar as well. His, however, will be based off of the popular Nickelodeon series.
Shyamalan to Adapt Avatar
Fox and Cameron have their Avatar and so will Paramount and Shyamalan. The director has signed a three-picture deal with Paramount's MTV Films and Nick Movies to adapt the animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender. Shyamalan will write, direct and produce the live-action adaptation.
Nick TV's Avatar, which is set in an Asian-influenced fantasy world permeated by martial arts and magic, follows the adventures of the successor to a long line of Avatars who must put aside his irresponsible ways and stop the Fire Nation from enslaving the Water, Earth and Air nations.
The show debuted on Nicktoons in February 2005. Aimed at 6- to 11- years olds, the show has achieved strong ratings that reach out of the expected demographic.
Paramount confirmed the pact with Shyamalan only hours after Cameron confirmed his own Avatar.
Though the two projects have the same name, they are in no way related. To protect the title, Fox has already purchased the rights to it. Paramount is left with a slight modification to the likes of Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Avatar marks the first time Shyamalan has taken on a project that didn't originate from his own source material. Looks like somebody is getting desperate.
