Johnny Depp
Warner Bros has got to be desperate for some new
material. Though KGB agent Alexander Litvinenko has only recently died,
Warner Bros has teamed with Johnny Depp to purchase rights to a book that
hasn't been written yet.
Warner Bros, Depp to Resurrect Litvinenko
Warner Bros has purchased the screen rights to
the story of Litvinenko with Depp's banner, Infinitum Nihil, to produce.
Depp also has the option to use the film as a starring vehicle as well.
The film will be based off of "Sasha's Story: The Life and Death of
a Russian Spy", an unpublished book yet to be written by New York Times
London bureau chief Alan Cowell. Author has been on the Alexander Litvinenko
story since it first broke last November.
The book may be a bit too soon, considering that the London investigation
is still looking into the death of Litvinenko, who was poisoned in late
November by polonium-210. Just before his death, the KGB agent blamed Russian
President Vladimir Putin's regime for the murder; a regime he supposedly
had a lot of ill information on. The story has become one of the most mysterious
and perplexing crimes of the post-Cold War era, triggering an international
investigation led by the U.K.'s top counterterrorism officials.
Cowell plans to document Litvinenko's life up until
his poisoning and resulting death. By doing so, the author will address
the implications of the case for nuclear proliferation and international
terrorism.
The investigation initially suspected that Litvinenko was poisoned at a
sushi restaurant. Traces of the heavy metal has appeared at other locations
and therefore expanded the investigation.
Cowell will continue to cover the investigation as he writes his book.
