Kevin Smith
Kevin Smith is known for being longwinded. His Evening With… Q&As last four hours, and that's edited down. When he got a job on Live Free or Die Hard, he seized the opportunity to add the Smith to the Yippee Kai-Yays.
Kevin Smith Talks (In) Live Free or Die Hard
"What’s nice about working on those big, God awfully expensive Hollywood movies is they have so many writers, they don’t even notice if you’re one of them," said Smith. "So I got there, and I wrote myself a one page monologue, and I got to deliver it. It was hysterical, they let me do it. Bruce Willis was like, ‘Do it up, that was a good speech.’ So, you do it, and they totally went for it so that was kind of cool, and I got to give that speech in that movie. They were kind of riff friendly."
Don't expect John McLane to be answering questions about contract work on the Death Star though. Smith stayed on message. "There was one motto on that movie, and they kept saying it, which was, ‘Keep it Die Hard.’ So you couldn’t get in there and do a Jay and Silent Bob type monologue, but you had to make it germane to the movie. So I don’t give a funny speech, I wind up giving a very paranoid, Joe Pesci in JFK type speech, which was fun."
Smith's character is the one who tells McClane a Co. exactly what villain they're facing. "I know a lot about him. They kind of get bits and pieces, and I fill in all the missing material for them."
It's a low risk role for Smith. "Thankfully I'm not one of the dudes that gets shot, shot at, shoots or gets blown up. I'm one of the few actually nobody's ever chasing me."
Live Free or Die Hard opens to theatres on June 29th.
