Half of the stylists in Hollywood must have thought lets be different and go with something white. The white strapless gowns were innumerable at the 64th Annual Golden Globes.

64th Annual Golden Globe Fashion Show

There are always black dresses on the red carpet, but this year white was everywhere. Here are some of the stars who chose the white strapless dress de jour: Sarah Paulson (Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip), Drew Barrymore (Music and Lyrics) in John Galiano for Christian Dior, Heidi Klum (Project Runway), Kate Winslet (Little Children) in Ungaro, Mary Lynn Rajskub (24) in BCBG and sadly the list goes on.

The ladies who chose color truly stood out. Becki Newton (Ugly Betty) in an emerald satin, v-neck off the shoulder Kevin Hall. Her golden blond hair twisted in a low bun. America Ferrera (Ugly Betty) in a Brian Reyes purple, sweetheart neck gown with gathered bodice. Her long shag was worn in waves. Tawny Cypress (Heroes) worked a mint green halter by Kevin Hall with her hair in a polished ponytail. Felicity Huffman (Desperate Housewives) was a stunner in a bottle green halter dress with black bugle beading on the straps and bodice. Reese Witherspoon was in a bright lemon strapless cocktail length dress with clear crystals. She sported red satin evening sandals. Jada Pinkett Smith strolled the carpet in a coral Armani strapless with tiered strips and sleek hair. Sheryl Crow (best song nominee) wore a strapless eggplant Elie Saab with flowing curls.

Black is always fabulous at awards shows. Penelope Cruz wore Chanel couture by Karl Lagerfeld. The gown was scoop necked with an accentuated waistline and tiers of tulle. Jennifer Lopez chose a one shoulder Marchesa with gold trim and a plunging back. Her hair was definitely reminiscent of the 60’s. Also in black: Roseanne Arquette, Hillary Swank, Cate Blanchett and so many more.

Now for the best dressed of the evening. Jessica Biel (Home of the Brave) was a knockout in an amazingly fitted, fully beaded, silver backless gown. Her hair was coiffed in a messy updo and her makeup flawless. Ali Larter (Heroes) in a cream Reem Acra with a plunging neckline (much double stick tape required) with flowing lightly pleated skirt. She chose to wear her long blond hair down. Naomi Watts (The Painted Veil) was perfection in a turquoise strapless gown with swirled beading. Her hair done in a soft updo. Eva Longoria (Desperate Housewives) wore navy Ungaro with turquoise beading around the bodice and straps with an open lower back. Eva’s hair was in upswept curls. Angelina Jolie looking sleek in a charcoal St. John strapless with long flowing skirt with hair in a high bun. She also had the most wanted accessory of the evening – Brad Pitt.

Honorable mention awards go to: Jennifer Love Hewitt (Ghost Whisperer) in an olive metallic ball gown with beading and a bow at the waist. She had matching hoop earrings. Her half up half down hairdo was soft and sexy. Hayden Panettiere (Heroes) in a Monique Lhullier Grecian column dress with a wide bronze belt. She wore large drop emerald earrings and her hair pulled up and curled. Katherine Heigl (Grey’s Anatomy) wore Escada. The black strapless gown had a tulle ruffle with a mermaid skirt. Her blond hair was in a low bun. The ever fashionable Sarah Jessica Parker looked fresh in a champagne brocade very fitted cocktail dress with spaghetti straps and a brooch. She wore her golden hair long and flowing.

The ones who missed the mark: Sienna Miller in a Marchesa gown of gold and cream that was far too busy and mature for her. The dress overwhelmed her small frame. Her hair was in a mussed Heidi do. Beyonce (Dreamgirls) chose gold Elie Saab. It looked out dated not retro. Her hair was long and straight – nothing special. Svetlana Metkina (Bobby) in a much too revealing Versace. What would Borat say – wow wow wee wow. The pewter halter was tighter than skin and her ample bosoms were overly exposed. Her hair was in a severe bun, but no one was looking at her hair. Vanessa Williams (Ugly Betty) was in a beautiful Carmen Marc Valvo gown, but when she added the fur stole and the more than large curly hair piece what started as right went so wrong. Cameron Diaz (The Holiday) in what looked like a bad bride’s maid dress. There was one shoulder with tulle tiers and tiers of tulle on the bottom of the dress and a silver belt with a black satin bow. And her very dark hair was in a messy updo and red lipstick. It was all just too much.

The oops award of the evening goes to Ellen Pompeo (Grey’s Anatomy) in a white, knit Versace with silver geometric trim. It was a chilly evening in Los Angeles – she was wearing a clingy white dress – need I say more?

Stay tuned for updates.
