In a recent letter to shareholders, Robert Iger -- yes, the man who stepped in for Michael Eisner -- announced that Pixar has an animation in the works that should be ready for theatrical release in 2008; they even included a dinky picture (shown). Though Fox couldn't get their Robots to work, Pixar feels that Wall-E is a better model.
Pixar's Next: Wall-E
Though most of Pixar/Disney is still working overtime to figure out how the hell they are going to convince moviegoers to go see Ratatouille, the studio is also busy at work thinking about the long-term. What is the long-term? Well, as far as we can see, it is Wall-E. Due out in theatres June 27th, 2008, Wall-E is the story of a single robot trying to, well, nobody really knows. It has been rumored, however, that the film will cover this little robot's adventure through outer space as he, she, uhh, it seeks a home.
Though CG animation is not the guarantee that it once was, I got to admit that I like where Pixar is going with this one. A CG robot is cool for one, and just imagine the beautiful landscapes a computer can create of a semi-imaginary outer space.
But back to the short-term, and the short-term is 2007. It was reported last month that Pixar/Disney were in the midst of a debacle on how to market Ratatouille. Something that (last I've heard) is still troubling them. The film is due out this June.
