Producers Guild of America Pick's Little Miss Sunshine
After all 3,300 votes were tallied from the PGA members, the Darryl F. Zanuck trophy was handed to Sunshine producers Marc Turtletaub, David T. Friendly, Peter Saraf, Albert Berger and Ron Yerxa. One can only assume that the alcohol then began to flow in the Century Plaza Hotel to celebrate a surprising achievement.
With an $8 million pricetag, Little Miss Sunshine is officially the least expensive PGA winner to date. The win should give the film some significant awards season momentum. The PGA winner is a good indicator of which way the Academy will swing, with 11 of their top feature choices becoming Oscar winners in the last 17 years.
The last film where the PGA and the Academy agreed? Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, which took best film in 2004.
Tom Hanks presented the award to the Sunshine producers. Hanks has plenty of experience with the PGA, as Forrest Gump was selected top feature back when everybody was still quoting, "Life is like a box of chocolates..."
