James McAvoy in Narnia
A new rumor just beamed aboard the Enterprise. Who to play young Scotty in Star Trek XI? Who can match up to the original character played by Canadian actor James Doohan?
How about Mr. Tumnus? Well, not exactly the faun from Narnia, but the guy who played him. If the rumor picked up by IGN turns out to be true, Scottish actor James McAvoy will soon be receiving requests for more power from James T. Kirk.
James McAvoy is Montgomery "Scotty" Scott?
According to the rumor, James McAvoy -- who can now be seen in The Last King of Scotland -- is likely to be given the role of Scotty in Star Trek XI. Fitting, since he already has the accent and a look close enough to the chief engineer who performed more than a few harrowing miracles while aboard the USS Enterprise. Add the fact that "Scotty" was also born in Scotland and we can call this a perfect fit.
"[The studio] thinks [McAvoy] could form a brilliant double act with Matt [Damon, rumored to play Kirk]," said the Sunday Mail's source. "James's star is on the rise after The Last King of Scotland. He's Scottish and has box-office appeal, so he fulfills both criteria."
The actor is such a brilliant choice for the part that one would have to assume that James McAvoy will be one of those few rumors that Paramount confirms.
It was Doohan who decided to give "Scotty" the Scottish accent after trying a few different ones out for the character; Doohan was obviously talented at accents. His final reasoning came down to his own claim that Scottish people make the best engineers, which Scotty was.
