The Hobbit
Time to wipe the dust off of our Hobbit
stock photo. Now that Jackson is officially on the outs with New Line, Sam
Raimi's name has yet again popped to the top of the short list of possible
directors.
Rumor Returns: Sam Raimi Thinking to Direct The Hobbit
Back in November we posted a rumor
from TheOneRing claiming that Sam Raimi was looking to step in for Jackson
on The Hobbit for New Line. The rumor quickly disappeared
and, for the past couple months, we didn't think anything of it. Add the
fact that Columbia Pictures is frantically trying to get a Spider-Man
4 in production, it looked like Raimi's hands would be tied for
at least another couple of years.
But here we are again, and this time it is the Los
Angeles Times who claim that to have the inside scoop on how Sam
Raimi is indeed considering the film(s).
In a move that would have ramifications for
several major multi-nationals, and millions of fans, "Spider-Man"
maestro Sam Raimi has been telling associates, as well as his corporate
masters at Sony, that he is thinking of directing "The Hobbit,"
the prequel to J.R.R. Tolkien's masterwork, "The Lord of the Rings."
At least two top-level insiders – who declined to be named -- have
heard the words out of the director's mouth.
According to a New Line source, the studio
isn't just contemplating one "Hobbit" movie, but two. The prequel
tells the story of hobbit Bilbo Baggins and how he first discovers the magical
but sinister ring, the very object that drives the action in "Lord
of the Rings."
Wait a sec, wasn't it Jackson's idea to make The Hobbit
two films instead of one? Sounds like New Line is playing dirty.
The idea of Raimi behind the camera for The Hobbit should
have most conflicted. There is no denying that the director makes incredible
films, but his involvement would (1.) rule out any chance of Jackson and
(2.) possibly kill any chance of a Spider-Man 4 for at
least a couple more years. Good luck getting any of the cast to return then.
