Toy Story
Studio execs are not keeping as tightlipped as they used to. Early Thursday Rupert Murdoch let it slip that there would be a Borat sequel and now Lasseter and Disney Animation president Ed Catmull have stepped out of the Disney/Pixar closet to announce that a Toy Story 3 has received the greenlight.
There is a catch, however, as John Lasseter won't be the director.
Toy Story 3 to be Directed by Lee Unkrich
Though Lasseter successfully directed the first two Toy Story films, his new post as chief creative officer of Disney Animation could be keeping him too tied up to try his hand at any individual projects. Even the ones that owe their franchiseship, franchisedom, er, franchisething to him.
Little Miss Sunshine scribe, Michael Arndt, has been given the task of writing Toy Story 3's script.
The decision to have a new director didn't faze Lasseter, and he had this to say on the project:
The greatest thing about the merger of the two companies is that the creators of Toy Story 1 and 2 can make 3 with the story that we wanted.
For those of you who are worried about the shift to Unkrich, rest assured to know that he co-directed Toy Story 2 (nice), Monsters, Inc. (loved it!) and Finding Nemo (eh, not so much).
Before the Disney/Pixar merger, Disney had planned to go forward with a Toy Story 3 without Pixar consent.
