Though the scariest dude to ever live in Deadwood, Ian McShane will try the role of mentor to the last of the 'Old Ones' in The Dark Is Rising.

Ian McShane, Frances Conroy and Alexander Ludwig have all been selected to star in The Dark Is Rising for 20th Century Fox and Walden Media.
Part of a five-book series from author Susan Cooper, The Dark Is Rising tells the story of Will Stanton, who discovers at age 11 that he's the last of a group of immortals called the Old Ones. This group is dedicated at keeping dark forces at balance. Will is given the task of saving the world.
Knowing Walden Media, expect The Dark Is Rising to be a children's fantasy.
MyShane will play Merriman Lyon, one of the Olde Ones who serves as Stanton's mentor.
John Hodge (Trainspotting) is adapting the book for the bigscreen.
McShane recently wrapped Case No. 39 with Renee Zellweger.
Expect a book-to-film on The Dark Is Rising shortly.
