Watchmen
Producer Deborah Snyder inherited a major comic book project from her husband, director Zack. Watchmen is his next project, and now Deborah is immersed in its world.
Deborah Snyder Talks Watchmen
"I come to it as a new fan actually," she said. "It's such a complex graphic novel. It took me a long time to wrap my head around it and lots of conversations with Zack and the producers about it and I have to say, it's such an exciting project and I love what it does to the superhero genre. In a world that we live in where we're going to have all these superhero films and it turns it on its ear and deals with more serious subject matter, that's really exciting to me. It's a bear though, I'll tell you that much. It really is."
When she produces the film, she could succeed where powerhouses like Joel Silver were unable to get it mounted. She didn't take the bate on bashing her colleagues, but feels Zack's approach sets it apart from other attempts.
"I think everybody's tried to change it and I think the thing is really respecting the graphic novel like you would a novel. Hollywood hasn't done that so much. Zack did it 300, he wants to go back and do it. I think a lot of other scripts that I've read, they tried to change it and make it something else and I think that's why it didn't work. It's so complex and it's so woven, once you change one thing, you bring it to current day, it doesn't fit together anymore."
