When I first saw the trailers for School for Scoundrels I predicted that the film was going to be amazing. Unfortunately, the film doesn't exploit the funny moments when it should and a "could have been" is instead up to par with Bad News Bears.

DVD Review & Contest: School for Scoundrels

Maybe it was my exaggerated expectations that caused me to only like (not love) School for Scoundrels. The film does have its share of classic moments, but some of the story development just sucks. Shooting a guy with a paintball gun makes you a man? Strange, I used to play that sport all the time. I must then be the uberman.

Seriously, I didn't understand the thought process there. But let me get to the story.

John Heder plays Roger, a down on his luck loser who needs emergency help not only to meet a girl, but to survive in the world. In short, he is just one big pussy with smaller pussies growing all over him.

In comes egomaniacal teacher played by Thornton. Though Roger looks like a lost cause, a game of paintball proves that he can be, I don't know, a man. It turns out that Roger's teacher likes to pick out the best student and announce "game on!" Roger becomes the target and must spend the rest of the film battling to win back the girl of his interest.

The film is OK to semi-good, but it could have been great. If you are one of those moviegoers who can't get enough ballbusting gags, then School for Scoundrels will definitely earn a spot among your DVD collection.

I for one got a huge kick out of the mace in an elevator.

The unrated DVD (why unrated?) comes packaged with a few extra features including a gag reel, an alternate ending and an unrated Making-Of.

2.5/5
