One thing is for sure. Mos Def is one damn talented individual. Bypassing that fact and coming to the realization that Bendan Fraser is playing a bad guy (which he can’t do convincingly) and you might want to take a rain check on Journey to the End of the Night.

DVD Review: Journey to the End of the Night

Where do I begin? Well let’s start with what the film is not. It is not a gritty portrayal of Sao Paolo, Brazil which is what I was so hoping it would be, i.e. this movie could have taken place anywhere. The feel of the city was suffocated by a plot with more holes than a sieve and acting that can be deemed questionable at best. Catalina Sandino Moreno held her own in this story but you felt that her character could have been so much more interesting.

The film started off with a great premise but through the use of cliché after cliché and senseless violence, you start to feel like an abandoned child at the mall. The grainy feel of the film is quite interesting and something to commend but it doesn’t really convince you that you should like this movie. Mos Def does play a Nigerian immigrant remarkably and with such fervor that I almost feel bad knocking this movie if only for his sake.

Brendan Fraser’s desperate attempt at acting emotionally turned into an embarrassment, quite frankly, and the ending of the movie is something you would expect to see in some sort of action spoof.

If you’re looking for a street tough movie about a troubled and violent Brazilian city, check out City of God.
