The Unit The Unit

Fans of CBS's military series The Unit can look forward to more action packed episodes towards the end of this season. Unit member Michael Irby shared the details of a particularly exciting episode he just wrapped.

Interview: Irby Talks Upcoming Episodes of The Unit

"We just finished working on a fantastic episode, Eric Haney's episode, the creator and one of the producers of the show," said Irby. "We have a one hour mission basically, it's just the five guys, myself and Dennis, Max, Scott and Demore. And we get ourselves into a situation and it's just a full-on, one hour battle from 9 o'clock to 10 o'clock. We never go home and it was just a great episode to work on. Everything got really tense. We're out in the middle of nowhere for eight days straight. We didn't have those creature comforts of the studio. So it was great. I can only imagine, I would never put myself in those guys' shoes but I can only imagine what it felt like."

Particularly for a television show to accomplish that. We usually get a burst or two of action, but not an entire episode. "I mean, there's definitely some stuff going on in between but we're having like Saving Private Ryan days out there. It was just like wow. It was just intense. It was just intense and we got the pleasure of hearing 'Cut' and 'We didn't quite get it. Let's do it again.' And it was fun on one side but if you turn on to what's actually going on, it's actually pretty heavy."

In another episode, yet to shoot, Irby's character will become more of a lover than a fighter. "There's a little bit of a love interest coming up for me in the next few episodes we're getting ready to start shooting now. I can't really say anything about it but it's great. It's a David Mamet script and it's just so exciting to know I'm getting ready to go into work and really start doing acting. The bomb stuff and the gun stuff is always so much fun but at the end of the day, we're all artists and it's nice to be able to be given that opportunity, so I'm looking forward to it."

Though The Unit is an ensemble show, the upcoming romance may be the closest Irby comes to a featured episode. "This next one, well, it's very much the ensemble. We're never going to get away from that which is okay. It's really okay. It keeps the workload down and I think as long as we feed everybody, I think it's all good. But yes, I guess this would be considered my one featured episode of the season. So yeah, it's going to be a good one. It's called Two Coins. It'll probably be coming up in the next three or four weeks."

As the cast and crew head towards the end of season two, thoughts drift towards the finale. While most series end in a big cliffhanger to hook you for the following year, Irby thinks Unit fans will be able to avoid that anxiety. "I don't really think our creators believe in that. I think they're pretty straightforward. They don't like to manipulate or lay out any hooks or bait or anything. We're just trying to tell the truth. Sometimes there are these units and people don’t die for a long time. Sometimes they get all the way in and all the way out without ever losing a team member. There's that and there's also sometimes you lose the entire team. There are all different types of toys and devices that you can use but I think we really try and stay away from that and that's why we're a success."

The Unit airs Tuesday at 9 on CBS.

Stay tuned for updates.
