Infernal Affairs
I must admit. The thought of having to sit through this trilogy seemed a bit daunting at first. Yes I know that The Departed was based on Infernal Affairs but I was really worried about numbers 2 and 3 in this trilogy. But first thing’s first: Infernal Affairs was better than The Departed! Flat out. The film has you by throat and never relents. It is truly cinematic genius. Director’s Andrew Lau and Alan Mak’s vision is about as far from the norm as possible and it’s a breath of fresh air. If you saw this in the theater, there would be no leaving to urinate, the pant leg would do.
DVD Review: Infernal Affairs Trilogy
After being blown away by the original, I was expecting too much from the sequel (which was actually the prequel) and at the same time anticipating so little since sequels are usually made for the bank account’s sake. Thankfully, it scored big, but not as big as the original. Obviously having the same directorial/writing team on for #2, made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. But like so many sequels it does not quite live up to its big brother but what movie really could have? The sequel does hold its own and its pacing and gripping storyline is enough to keep yo on the edge of your seat.
For those of you that think you can watch #2 before #1, don’t. Although it’s a prequel, it touches on a lot of things that you unknowingly learned in the original film.
As far as the third installment, I don’t even really want to touch on it too much because it is what it is…the movie that makes 2 other movies a trilogy. The third installment actually takes place after the first one ended. It hangs on dearly in the beginning to keep you enthralled but seems to lose some if its credibility towards the end.
Nonetheless, having seen the previous 2 films, I enjoyed finishing off the third film and all in all I thought it was spectacular. If you’re going to talk about how good The Departed was, you owe it to yourself to see why it was so good. As they say, nothing beats the original.
