With Avatar being James Cameron's first feature film since Titanic, he could have taken years with production. Instead, it looks like production and postproduction will only take two and change.
Cameron's Avatar Theatrical Release: May 22, 2009
Avatar takes place in the future and pits a band of humans in a battle against a distant planet's indigenous population. The film's cast has recently grown to Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Peter Mensah, Laz Alonso, Wes Studi, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver and Zoe Saldana.
With the cast nearly complete, 20th Century Fox has announced that Avatar will begin filming this April with a theatrical release set for May 22nd, 2009.
The film will be shot entirely in the new 3-D format that both Cameron and Lucas have both been pushing to get into theatres the past few years. Just in case theaters are slow to adapt, Avatar will be released in both 3-D and 2-D formats.
Cameron has had Avatar in his head for over a decade. Patience is a virtue, as the director was forced to wait on advances in technology.
Cameron and Jon Landau are producing for Cameron's Lightstorm Entertainment.
