Color, color, color; the theme of the 79th Annual Academy Awards seemed to be anything but black. Gowns ranged from the lightest blush to deep fuchsia and what a welcome change. Other trends seen on the red carpet were stacked bracelets, button earrings, red lipstick and wavy 1940’s style hair.
2007 Oscar Fashion
Let’s do what the Oscars did not and start with the top awards while everyone is still awake. Among the best of the evening was Penelope Cruz in Versace. The blush strapless dress had a fitted bodice and beautiful seaming. The train was feather-like. Penelope’s dark hair was pulled back into a bun with a braid. She wore large floral diamond button earrings. The look screamed star. Helen Mirren was another standout in Christian Lacroix. The neckline was cut just perfectly. The scoop was sexy for sixty-one. Her hair was down and soft. Mirren was also wearing button style diamond earrings. It may be time to retire the chandelier earrings so hot for the past few years. Cate Blanchett in Armani Prive was shimmering in her gunmetal, one shoulder mesh gown with tulle overlay. Her hair worn in a soft chignon. Jessica Biel worked a deep fuchsia halter gown by Oscar de la Renta. The split back only served to further show off her killer body. Jessica’s hair tousled in a wavy up do. Jennifer Lopez completes the top honors in a pink empire Marchesa with a multi strand jeweled boat neck. Her chestnut hair coiffed into a softly curled bob.
There were many others who did an amazing job. Portia de Rossi was smashing in a dark purple halter with a nearly bare back. Her light blonde hair pulled in a high ponytail. Jodie Foster was in a Vera Wang steel blue halter. Here hair styled short and flirty with bangs. Kate Winslet was ethereal in a mint one shoulder empire Valentino. She also opted for flower button earrings. Reese Witherspoon chose an aubergine strapless Nina Ricci with a tiered train. Her hair was worn down and straight with bangs. Celine Dion was striking in a deep v neck, wrap front, bottle green James Galanos. The color was deep and rich. There was a brooch on the left hip. She wore what appeared to be stacked bangles that were actually a snake bracelet.
The one item too much wrecked the outfit award is shared by Rachel Weisz, Maggie Gyllenhall and Jennifer Hudson. Rachel Weisz was in a luscious champagne Vera Wang strapless with a crystal neckline including a crystal bow. Her hair was reminiscent of the 1940’s. She followed the red lipstick trend. But then she added a large brooch on a neck chain. There went the look. Maggie Gyllenhall wore a navy and black one shoulder dress with feathers at the hemline. She also chose red lipstick. But what was with the feather hat? Jennifer Hudson chose a milk chocolate Oscar de la Renta. The dress was gathered at the bust with a flowing skirt that included pockets. Her hair was swept up to one side in loose curls. She was looking very pretty until the metallic bolero jacket. It had a rolled stand up collar. Too Jetsons for me. She should have gone with her after party gown for the actual ceremony. It was incredible.
Helen Mirren
In the less favorite category would be Cameron Diaz in a white portrait collar Valentino, Jada Pinkett Smith in a mustard strapless Carolina Herrera, Anne Hathaway in a white lace strapless Valentino with a huge black bow on the bodice, and Beyonce in a mint green one shoulder Armani with dyed to match stones.
The Academy Awards are the most glamorous event in Show Business. Ladies special occasions call for special hair. Gwyneth Paltrow glowed in a dusty apricot Zac Posen with lots of seaming. The dress was very old Hollywood, but the hair was stick straight and in her face. I realize it was to give a better view of the back of the dress but we do want to see her face. Nicole Kidman in a lipstick red Balenciaga halter dress with a huge bow at the neck. Her hair also worn straight and swept to the side opposite the bow. Queen Latifah, one of the few who chose a black gown, was in Carmen Marc Valvo. The dress looked great on her but with very everyday hair.
Now for the losing category. Meryl Steep wore Prada with lots of orange beads and a large pendant. The look was very Taos. Kirsten Dunst in Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel. The dress was silver and ill fitting with too much going on. The dress seemed to be an homage to the 1930’s but it was retro gone wrong. Her heavy straight bangs with a little bun were all wrong. In the future, prior to the event, a full length mirror and Polaroid of the entire look are highly recommended.
