Ghost Special Edition
When Paramount first came into the DVD game, they were just releasing the movies. That was annoying but perhaps it paid off as a long term strategy, because now they can re-release the same movies as special editions. The latest is Ghost.
DVD Review: Ghost Special Edition
There may be standard featurettes but we're far enough away from the movie that it's all relevant. The story of Jerry Zucker's unorthodox tonal shift is well told, and the evolution of Sam Wheat's character. B-roll footage is interspersed, showing old video footage of the actors on set.
Patrick Swayze and Whoopi Goldber give new interviews. They use Demi Moore on the set of Nothing But Trouble. I wonder how they ended up doing Ghost interviews after filming wrapped but not at a press junket.
A spot on real mediums (media?) has become all too familiar. Any supernatural story interviews the "real deal" and this is about as convincing as all the others. They did get James Van Praagh though, so there's a big name. They tie it to the film, validating specific depictions of the afterlife. But you've got to take their word for it.
Of course, what everyone is waiting for is the spot on the love scene at the clay wheel. Any clay mishaps you want to hear about are revealed here.
Finally, they show the AFI spot including Ghost as one of their 100 great passions, as well as 11 others. All the Paramount entries. Go figure.
