Shrek
Joe Stillman, one of the more important influences on the Shrek franchise, has been picked up to deliver the next best CGI movie.
Stillman to Write Planet One
Handmade Films Intl. and Ilion Animation Studios have teams up to produce and co-finance Planet One, a CGI animation with a budget set at $50 million. To help ensure success, Planet One will be written by Shrek scribe Joe Stillman.
The film is described as a different take on an 'alien' invasion. The inhabitants of Planet One, who have two antennae and eight fingers, live in a world strangely akin to American suburbia of the 1950s, with drive-in movies, picket fences and a persistent fear of alien invasion — which is fulfilled when a human astronaut lands in their midst.
Videogame developer, Jorge Blanco, will direct. If you are a fan of the PC game Commandos then you already know of is work.
Since the director will be green, most of the confidence will lie with Joe Stillman. The scribe has contributed screenplays to all three Shrek while helping write stories for both Beavis and Butthead and King of the Hill.
Production for Planet One is expected to start in May with a theatrical release set for Christmas 2008. Unfortunately for Handmade-Ilion, this date has already been taken by Star Trek XI. Though the studios won't say if this has anything to do with it, the film may get pushed to Easter 2009.
