300
Though 300 Spartans played the defensive against an invading Persian force, 300 had its own assault on the weekend box office - an assault that has landed the R-rated film the title of "Best March Opening Ever".
Weekend Box Office: 300
How much must one earn to take a box office record for March? Disney's Ice Age: The Meltdown previously held the title with $68 million. Early tracking numbers are predicting that 300 will finish out its opening weekend with just over $70 million.
A whopping $70 million will not only give 300 the biggest March opening to date, but the film was also the third biggest R-rated opening ever - right behind The Matrix Reloaded and The Passion of the Christ. Nobody likes being placed at third -- especially not a Spartan -- so it is nice to know that 300 is also the biggest R-rated pic to open in March.
How did 300 perform so well? Besides being the first real summer tentpole that features more action than any fanboy could ever ask for, it turns out that the film pulled in quite the female audience as well. Having Gerard Butler star was an easy guarantee to attract the thousands of Butlerites across the globe, but Reuters claims that wasn't it. It turns out that women also dug the film thanks to its heavy use of male nudity and a strong female lead played by Lena Headey.
