Disney continues to accidentally come upon great franchises. Does anybody remember when Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl was just Pirates of the Caribbean? A one-installment adventure.
The same goes for the surprise smash hit National Treasure, which currently has a sequel coming our way titled National Treasure: Book of Secrets. Already in production in Washington, DC, it was only a matter of time before Touchstone would have to release at least some casting details.
I mean, Nicolas Cage is in this film, right?
Harris and Mirren Hunt a National Treasure Sequel
The good people over at Joblo have confirmed that Elizabeth herself, Helen Mirren, has joined the cast of Book of Secrets. Mirren will play Emily Gates, mother to Cage's character. As an added bonus, almost-Oscar-winner Ed Harris will reunite with Cage as the film's antagonist. The two last went head to head in The Rock.
Harris will play Jeb Wilkinson, a character that we can guess has some relation to John Wilkes Booth; or, maybe not - this is a trivial pursuit adventure after all.
Michael Bay had this to say on the film's plot: "It's another little treasure hunt, and this time it involves [Abe] Lincoln and John Wilkes Booth and 18 pages which are actually missing from [Lincoln's] diary." Teasing the plot further, Bruckheimer posed the central question of the sequel. "What was in those 18 pages?"
