American Idol American Idol
The mentor this week is the world’s smoothest octogenarian, Tony Bennett. Our idols will be singing ‘the standards” of which Mr. Bennett is the master. It will be fun to see the kids performing songs from their grandparents’ (or great grandparents’) era.

Let’s rank them from the best to you know who.

American Idol S6 (Finalist) Episode 4 Recap

1. Chris Richardson “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore” – what a comeback week – outstanding high notes – great quality to his voice – a very smooth, fun performance – Randy said one of his best performances of the season, hot – Paula said hip and cool – Simon said very good, believable kind of hip, worked it out.

2. Jordin “On a Clear Day” – fresh – her voice exquisite – she is gaining momentum – Randy said the bomb, already a pro at 17, hot – Paula said a magnet of joy, she is ‘frickin proud’ – Simon said she sang it well, but he felt it was old fashioned not hip.

3. Melinda “I’ve Got Rhythm” – she is a true performer – the end was fun – Randy said this is a lesson in singing, she gets the feeling, this is how you do it – Paula said flawless – Simon said he didn’t like the first half of the song too cabaret, but the second half was great and fun.

4. Blake “Mack the Knife” – leave it to a cool guy to pick a cool song – great tonality to his voice – Randy said good song for him with a few pitch problems – Paula said hip cat, fun and cool – Simon said good song choice.

5. LaKisha “Stormy Weather” – voice was great – could have modernized song a little more – seemed 1950ish - Randy said started rough, but ended the bomb – Paula said she looked gorgeous – Simon said she was back in form, sassy, a great performance.

6. Phil “Night and Day” – makes a perfect crooner - would have liked to see him in a fedora – really has a beautiful voice – Randy said he sang it well, but felt no connection or passion – Paula said she reminded him of a young Frank Sinatra – Simon said which Frank Sinatra, he felt it was gloomy and dark with no life.

7. Gina “Smile” – pretty, but I felt like the performance was missing something – Randy said it was a nice controlled performance – Paula said flawless and understated – Simon said two previous girls out sang her.

8. Haley “Ain’t Misbehavin” – returned to her T&A ways – song all over the place – just not good for me – Randy and Paula deferred to Simon – Simon said she has good legs and it was ‘pageanty’.

9. Sanjaya “Cheek to Cheek” – now I know most of America is watching just to see what he does with his hair – it was slicked back Suave Bola style and wearing a Saturday Night Fever white suit – now that that’s behind us, the singing was marginal at best – very amateurish – the highlight was dancing with Paula – Randy said he can’t comment on the vocals anymore and he just considers him an ‘entertainer’ now – Paula said he is charming, although she wasn’t sure if this was ‘Dancing with the Stars’ or American Idol – Simon said it is time to take a different tact “incredible”.

Hopefully America has come to its collective senses and will send home the right contestant. Results Wednesday night on Fox.
