Drive Drive: Nathon Fillion

Nathan Fillion's a funny guy. He's good at wisecracking action heroes, but even better at giving interviews. While promoting his upcoming Fox action series Drive, he doled out as many zingers as he could to keep the pace moving.

Nathon Fillion Hits the Road with Drive

When asked about the difficulties pretending to be driving really fast on a green screen stage, he simply said, "It’s a piece of cake." When asked about comparisons to The Amazing Race, he said. "I’ve seen it a couple of times. I like it but it’s not a show that I Tivo." When asked if his character is going to take a beating, he said, "I take a beating in every show."

Getting serious, Fillion did let us in on important stuff, like what the show is actually about. "His wife was kidnapped, he reports it of course and then weeks later, his wife’s engagement present starts to ring and that’s how he’s introduced to the race."

As the Fox ads indicate, this is a secret race where some compete because they have to, some because they want to. "He’s being forced into something that he doesn’t actually want to do. He’s an everyman. I think I’ve found my niche and I think my niche is just everyday regular people. I love watching FBI shows. I don't think I’m the FBI guy. I love watching Star Trek. I don't think I’m the military type Star Trek captain. I’m the captain of the spaceship that he bought it himself. That’s why he’s the captain because he bought the boat."

Drive has a cast already approaching the size of Lost and Heroes, so it may be a slightly lighter job than Fillion has been accustomed to. "I don’t have a whole list of jobs that come to me and I go, ‘You know what? I’m going to pick this one because it’s an ensemble and it’s Tim Minear.’ Jobs come along and I say, ‘Ah, I get to do that? Let’s go.’ I’m very, very fortunate that the job opportunities that come along for me are in some way extremely fulfilling, challenging yet lots of fun. It’s acting, so it’s always going to be lots of fun."

Fillion has quite a drive to work every day too. "It’s a piece of cake because all the traffic’s coming in when I’m going out and all the traffic’s going out when I’m coming in. So far, so good for that one."

His Drive character will start out with a gardening truck, but Fillion's real ride is a bit nicer. "I’m driving a Tahoe right now. I like to be nice and high off the road in Los Angeles because people are so crazy driving here, if you ever get hit, I’d rather they hit me below my knees and not at my face, my beautiful face."

Don't worry, he drives safely. "I’m not a ticket guy. I did actually accidentally run through a stop sign in my own neighborhood the other day, but I didn’t get caught. This is in no means a confession and legally binding."

Stay tuned for updates.
