The Mummy
It looks like you can't win them all. After Rob Cohen joined on to direct the third installment in The Mummy franchise, simply titled The Mummy 3, next up was the cast.
Though Brendan Fraser has closed a new deal with Universal for the film, Weisz instead stepped back from the table.
Brendan for, Weisz Against The Mummy 3
With production set to begin late this summer, we now have Brendan Fraser back as the wisecracking hero and Jet Li as the new villain. Sure, it would have been nice to keep the whole romantic relationship going -- something that was central to the previous two Mummy films -- a new installment is doable even without Weisz.
It comes as a surprise that Weisz would not join up, however, considering that she was the first who showed interest in reprising her role.
It could just be that Weisz has a crowded to-do list at the moment with a baby-on-board and upcoming projects including The Brothers Bloom and Dirt Music.
Universal had a completed script from Smallville creators Miles Millar and Alfred Gough, who will now have to do some major edits to take into account Weisz's absense.
Fraser, who I have only seen recently in Scrubs reruns, could have a big 2008 with both Journey 3D, Inkheart and now this.
