Grindhouse
When Grindhouse performed far below expectations and made less than Are We Done Yet? during its opening week, I remained optimistic and assumed Easter had something to do with moviegoers not wanting to see something as violent as this compilation of great cinema.
Since Fred absolutely loved the film, I entered theatres this weekend to test if a three-hour running time was really that daunting.
Grindhouse - Go See It
Two films and some trailers later, I came to the realization that Planet Terror and Death Proof represent some of the best cinema we are likely to see in 2007. Sure, we have quite a summer coming our way with huge tentpoles on the horizon, but these two films remind us of why we go to the movies in the first place -- for the enjoyment of film and filmmaking.
Each film offers something completely different. While Rodriguez has fun blowing both shit and people up -- with humorous effect -- in Planet Terror, Tarantino resorts to his genius dialogue and cinematography to deliver a film that relies on old school stunt work. The scene where we get to see exactly what happens when two vehicles collide head on is bound to be one of the coolest shots of this decade.
Though the trailers suggest that the films are violent and gory, know that Rodriguez/Tarantino figure out a way to make even the most gory of scenes entertaining and humorous.
I can't say a single bad thing about either film showcased in Grindhouse. Word of mouth should be carrying this Tarantino/Rodriguez project to glory, which is why I am dumbstruck to hear that the film dropped over 60% in its second week.
On that note, I am disgusted with the moviegoing community at the moment. If films like Grindhouse do not get seen we will have convinced studios that films like Are We Done Yet? or Fantastic Four 17 are the way of the future. Thank God 300 performed well, at least one film that showed sack and ingenuity was appreciated.
Do yourself and moviegoers everywhere a favor, get your ass to theatres and see Grindhouse!
Trust me, it's a blasty blast.
